最簡單的指標之一，就是看牠是否具備使用工具的能力。泰烏索斯人不會穿「衣服」，因此第一個、也是最簡單的指標對我們來說毫無用處。那麼，其他形式的工具呢？這就比較難判斷了。我們沒有發現工廠、工坊，也沒有看到如同地球上的農業開發景觀——然而，只要仔細觀察，便無法否認：這個世界，甚至這顆星球本身，彷彿經過某種有意識的存在刻意塑造。

How do we know if an organism is sentient?
One of the easiest things to look for is if it is capable of tool use. The Teuthos do not wear 'clothes', so the first and easiest metric is no use to us. What about other forms of tools? Here, it is a little harder to judge. We see no factories, no workshops or agricultural landscaping as we are used to on Earth - but look closer and it is irrefutable that the world, the planet itself, appears to have been shaped by a deliberate, sentient consciousness.
