가장 쉬운 판별법 중 하나는 도구를 쓸 수 있느냐다. 테우토스는 '옷'을 입지 않으므로 첫 번째이자 가장 쉬운 그 기준은 우리에게 소용이 없다. 그럼 다른 형태의 도구는 어떨까? 여기서부턴 판단하기가 조금 까다로워진다. 지구에서 익숙하게 보던 공장도 작업장도 농경지도 보이지 않는다. 하지만 자세히 들여다보면 이 세계, 행성 그 자체가 뚜렷한 의도와 자아를 지닌 의식에 의해 빚어진 것으로 보인다는 사실만은 부정할 수 없다.

How do we know if an organism is sentient?
One of the easiest things to look for is if it is capable of tool use. The Teuthos do not wear 'clothes', so the first and easiest metric is no use to us. What about other forms of tools? Here, it is a little harder to judge. We see no factories, no workshops or agricultural landscaping as we are used to on Earth - but look closer and it is irrefutable that the world, the planet itself, appears to have been shaped by a deliberate, sentient consciousness.
